It is clear that the two come from similar homes, rife with neglect and abuse. After Johnny kills Bob, Dally goes to great lengths to protect him from going to jail. Obviously, Dally's time in prison hardened him and he doesn't want that to happen to Johnny. Dally feels that his fate is set, but his slavation lies in saving Johnny. When Johnny dies, Dally loses all hope and snaps. He looks at Johnny and thinks that it is his duty to protect him and keep him out of trouble at all costs.He thinks that he can prevent Johnny from having as many terrible things happen to him, like they did to Dally. We see this protection when Dally helps Johnny after he kills the Soc.Dally looks at Johnny and sees the younger brother and only person who can really and truly relate to because they both come form a similar background of being neglected, abused, unwanted, and unloved.He looks at Johnny as his purpose for living, that he finally has a job, someone to look out for, but he does this in a very concealed manner not trying to ruin his reputation as a bad boy but yet everyone knows there is something more than a brotherly bond between them.Johnny on the other hand looks up to Dally as his role model. He wants to incorporate Dally's toughness, strength, self-confidence into his own life. He wants to be just like him. He looks at Dally as his older brother, someone who knows what he is going through, he knows deep down inside that Dally favors him and would do anything for him but uses this in a modest manner. Together they both help each other stay in line and a float. The even each other out and keep each other emotionally stable. It may not be obvious but it would be very hard for the one to live if the other dies, they are reliant on each other.
